Civil War Worries
I should really get my street protest/lefty politics/intersectionality blog off the ground, so I stop writing about this shit here.
Content Warning: I talk about nazis here.#
I know there are literally millions of writings about comparing MAGA to nazis. I haven’t read much about comparing the January 6th Riot to the Beer Hall Putsch. The main thesis is that they are both failed coups. In the Germany 1923 case, the nazi party ultimately came to power.
Using the timeline of Germany through the 30’s as a guide, what can we expect in the coming years?
They didn’t call it a civil war in Germany buuut…#
The political violence between the nazis and the communists escalated in the 30’s. Different groups fought in the streets, not unlike the unite the right rally. This is the part of history that concerns me, the post-putsch/pre-reichstag-fire era where the leftists and the nazis weilded equal voting power, and political violence was fairly common. That’s the problem with violence: once violence starts, it takes a lot more violence to stop it.
Yeah, I saw the movie#
I saw Civil War in the theater. I thought the movie was great from visual/story standpoint, but I don’t think most civil wars go down that way. The film looked more like the war in Ukraine, rather than Yemen or Lebanon, which is what I think the US would look like. Just warring factions going at it while a feeble government and a wrecked economy struggle to hold things together.
The war that I am gearing up for is in the streets. I have been volunteering as a medic and a marshall supporting Pro-Palestine marches and LGBTQ Pride events. It has helped me to feel like I am doing something to help, rather than doom scrolling. It has also helped me to re-use some of my military training (radio communications) to help Americans directly, which feels good.
I have also been working as an election official since 2020. Ohio has gone buck wild with special elections in the last couple of years, but the goal was to work the 2024 election. Unfortunately, I had to move to a new county, and I haven’t gotten connected to the board of elections in my new county.
I am hoping that this election goes smoothly and peacefully. I also hope that there is a Harris victory by a large enough margin that all of the election denial shenanegans get roundly defeated. But I am checking my gear, charging my radios, just in case.
