It’s probably an AI content moderation glitch. It’s probably no big deal.Just in case it’s not, I wanna judge Facebook for a minute.

They’re eating the Linux! They’re eating the privacy!#

Tom’s Hardware has an article about Facebook banning posts and locking accounts for posting about Linux.

The Distrowatch website claims that their posts to Facebook have been taken down because Linux may “facilitate the creation, sharing or hosting of malicious software.”

Which is hilarious because the entire backend of Facebook is hosted in Linux. I have no idea if that is true, but any tech company operating at that scale can’t possibly be running that much software from Microsoft or Sun Microsystems.

Content Warning: Self-righteousness and Pretentiousness#

Most of the time I am self-aware enough to know when I am being an asshole. This is absolutely not one of those times.

I understand that Facebook is an important marketing tool, but if you are a Linux website, and you are evangelizing open source software, why are you on a predatory commercial platform like FB?

Well, as a blogger with absolutely zero readership, I understand. This is something I call The Signal Trap: you are advocating for FOSS and federated media, but the people that are already on FOSS and federated media, have already heard, and accepted, a version of the pitch that you are making. So you have to go where the uninitiated are, which is Twitter and Facebook, and some asshole like me asks what you are even doing there.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.

Facebook is a den of bots and scammers. I think it’s hilarious that it targeted the wrong page. I know these things always happen: an automated system that fails to stop bad behavior always mistakenly targets good behavior. There is an entire industry dedicated to getting paid to slip past FB’s content and advertising controls to post cons, scams, and even human trafficking. The idea that they accidentally took down a page for Linux nerds is just perfect. 10/10, no notes.

OK, I’m done being an asshole. We will now return you to your regularly scheduled empathy and restraint.
